Job description: The “Too Big to Ignore: Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries Research” (www.toobigtoignore.net) is a new 6-year project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and involves 62 scientists and 15 organizations from around the world. The aim of the  partnership is to conduct research, foster policy dialogue and build capacity for small-scale fisheries, in order to elevate their profile, highlight their importance, and promote their sustainability. For the first phase of the project, we are seeking a post-doctoral fellow (PDF) who will be able to contribute to the development of a web-based, interactive information system on small-scale fisheries, and to conduct research on data visualization, as well as to help perform global analysis to assess the importance of this sector. The PDF will liaise with the researchers, partners and the information system manager in populating the database. Finally, he/she is expected to help with some aspects of project management, including preparing of reports.
The successful candidate will be working in an active environment, with opportunities to interact with researchers from around the world. During the tenure, he/she will be expected to contribute to the publication of journal article(s) related to the project and will be supported to attend conference(s) to present his/her work.
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a PhD in Geography, Fisheries, Environmental Sciences or any relevant discipline at the time of the start of the appointment. Applicants should have experience with the collection and analysis of fisheries data. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is expected, and database and software development skills would be key assets. An excellent command of verbal and written English is a must, as are positive attitude, entrepreneurial spirit, flexibility, creativity, and outstanding interpersonal skills. Additional language skills are highly desirable.
Salary: $40,000 (inclusive of benefits)
