 The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) conducts applied  research and development, technology transfer and educational services for  the fishing industry. The main areas of focus include seafood  sustainability, conservation engineering, fishing gear design and testing,  fishing vessel design, and fisheries development for emerging species.
 The Centre operates the world’s largest flume tank (22 metres) dedicated to  hydrodynamic testing, primarily for the harvesting and ocean technology  sectors. The Centre utilizes research vessels and commercial fishing  vessels to conduct at-sea comparative fishing experiments. Full scale sea  trials are conducted using mobile and static gears, electronic monitoring
 systems, a remote operated vehicle, underwater cameras, sonars and other  related equipment.
 
 DUTIES
 The successful applicant will lead the growth and development of research  initiatives at CSAR related to seafood sustainability and sustainable fishing practices. This will involve leading applied research initiatives related to the reduction of ecological impacts of fishing (e.g. bycatch, fuel consumption, carbon emission, and seabed impacts) which will aid in
 shaping sustainable seafood policy, as well as responding to industry requirements for standards and certification. This will involve combinations of industry engagement, proposal/grant writing, at-sea experiments, data collection and analysis, report writing, publication in peer reviewed journals, supervision of graduate students and liaison with provincial and federal departments and non-government organizations, including fish harvesters and processors.
 
 QUALIFICATIONS
 The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in fisheries science or closely related discipline, with related experience in seafood sustainability initiatives and sustainable fishing practices. The successful applicant will have a strong publication record for their career stage.
 Demonstrated abilities in writing scientific proposals, securing funding and implementation of multi-year research programs are required. Essential abilities include a willingness to work in a team setting as well as with industry, fish harvesters and government agencies. Experience in conducting collaborative industry-relevant research is an asset.
 
 SALARY: Commensurate with Marine Institute Instructors’ Collective Agreement (NAPE Local 7405)
