POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: ASSOCIATE AGENT

Non-Tenure Track Faculty

DESCRIPTION: Associate Agent is a non-tenure track faculty appointment in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and the University of Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program. It is a 12-month, full-time; term appointment (continued employment is contingent upon available funding). The position has 100% extension/research responsibilities. Funding is via a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Maryland and Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service. The principal location will be in the AREC Department, University of Maryland College Park, with additional office space at the Fisheries Service headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland. Recent or near completion Ph.D. recipients may want to consider this as a post-doctoral opportunity.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: The position represents a unique partnership between the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) at the University of Maryland College Park, the University of Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service. The Fishery Economist will work closely with the DNR Fisheries Service by providing supporting economic analysis for proposed fisheries regulations and other actions related to Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast fisheries such as blue crab, oysters, menhaden and striped bass. The Fishery Economist will have access to all DNR fisheries data in order to conduct analyses on how commercial or recreational regulations impact different sectors of the fishery, as well as overall economic impacts. In addition, the individual is expected to develop an applied research program in partnership with other AREC faculty on fishery policy issues such as catch shares, valuation of recreational fisheries, economic aspects of ecosystem based fisheries management and aquaculture.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in the area of resource economics or a closely related field is preferred. A Master’s Degree with relevant experience will also be considered. Applicants should have experience in the application of econometrics and bio-economic modeling to fisheries or related issues. Proficiency in the use of at least one statistical software package (e.g. STATA / SAS / Matlab / R) is required. Previous experience in local or federal fisheries management is desirable but not necessary. The individual must possess the ability to work independently, to function as part of interdepartmental and multi-institutional teams. Strong oral, written and electronic communication skills are essential. The employee should be willing to travel locally and occasionally work nights and on weekends.
SALARY: Commensurate with training and experience, with a starting range between $55,000 and $65,000. University of Maryland fringe benefits are provided.
