The Nereus Program is advertising for a postdoctoral fellow in Global Change Modelling to be based in UBC Fisheries (see below and attached). Please feel free to forward it to anyone who may be interested.
The Nereus Program at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, is currently looking for a postdoctoral fellow to research on modeling living marine resources under global change. The Nereus Program is a partnership between the Nippon Foundation and University of British Columbia, plus five leading academic institutes in North America and Europe, that undertakes interdisciplinary research with the view of developing new knowledge to promote sustainability for the world’s oceans.
 
Provided that a suitable applicant is identified and selected, the one year appointment will begin September 1, 2014. Funding for this position has been secured for three years. The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of extension upon satisfactory performance.
 
The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to the Program Co-Director, Dr. William Cheung. The position is based in Vancouver, Canada.
 
Job Description:
The selected candidate will conduct research on developing, comparing and analyzing projections from global-scale living marine resources (LMR) models. The selected candidate shall contribute to the development of LMR modelling approaches e.g., Dynamic Bioclimate Envelope Model and other species distribution models, and compare and analyze projections from existing global-scale LMR models developed by the Nereus Program and its partners; coordinate the development of future scenarios for LMR; and engage in other research activities of the Nereus Program. The candidate will have opportunity to collaborate with a team of world-leading senior and young researchers from natural to social sciences through the Nereus program, and participate in regional and international conferences and workshops.
Skills
·      Proficient in quantitative analysis of marine ecological data and biostatistics;
·      Ability to analyze and manage large datasets;
·      Knowledgeable in computer programing and development of computer simulation models;
·      Knowledge and research experience in oceanography and fisheries sciences is a plus;
·      Demonstrated ability to publish scientific findings in peer-review journal;
·      Organizational planning skills, including an ability to organize and coordinate workshops and seminars;
·      Proposal writing skills;
·      Positive work attitude and ability to work on an international interdisciplinary research team, as well as independently.
Qualifications
·      A minimum of a PhD degree in oceanography, marine ecology and fisheries science or related field;
·      Excellent written and spoken English.
Annual Salary
$50,000 – $62,000 CAD
