2018: Post Doctoral Fellowship in Fisheries Acoustics – NOAA Beaufort Laboratory

We are re-advertising our post-doctoral research associate position.  The position will be offered through the National Research Council Research Associateship Program (search on Research Opportunity 26.09.11.B7861) or .  Note that applications for NRC RAP are due 1 February 2018

Location: NOAA’s Beaufort Laboratory, National Center for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), National Ocean Service, Beaufort, North Carolina USA

Description of Program: The NCCOS conducts research to develop decision support tools, geospatial models and data visualization products to inform coastal ecosystem management. We use a suite of field sampling techniques, including advanced underwater remote sensing and hydroacoustics technologies, underwater optics, and scuba diving to conduct ecological assessments and experiments to understand impacts of stressors on coastal ecosystems. The group is part of an interdisciplinary Biogeography Branch specializing in ecological assessments, modeling, geospatial applications and marine spatial planning.

The primary focus area for this position is to evaluate analytical techniques for multi-frequency and broad-band fishery acoustic surveys toward the goal of fish species discrimination. Other focus areas include developing ecosystem indicators from split-beam and multi-beam echosounder surveys of coral reef and coastal ecosystems, as well as incorporating acoustic survey data into predictive models of abundance and habitat use of living marine resources.

Responsibilities: The research associate will be expected to develop a research project within the scope of the NCCOS mission under the primary objectives above. Travel is expected, including participation in research cruises or extended field missions as well as professional conferences and workshops.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in quantitative ecology, biology, oceanography or related field. Candidate must have demonstrated experience in fishery acoustics, statistical methods. The candidate will be expected to publish and communicate science in professional and public venues.

Salary: US$4,200/month, or commensurate with experience. Health insurance and moving expenses are available. This is a 1 year position with potential for renewal up to 3 years pending funding availability.
