JIMAR PIFSC ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH ANALYST (CLIMATE/ECOSYSTEM DYNAMICS)– ID# 16122. Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,222/Mon. DUTIES: Conducts research to advance our understanding of climate and ecosystem dynamics. Uses physical and biological data from satellites, research cruises, fisheries data, and ecosystem models to develop climate and ecosystem indicators for the pelagic and insular ecosystems. Prepares technical reports and scientific manuscripts summarizing results of these analyses, and presents findings at national and international meetings. Works closely with partners in
research institutions to build strong collaborative relationships. Provides assistance with proposal writing and administrative functions.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Science, Zoology, Oceanography, Biology, or Mathematics.

EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience analyzing large complex databases and using advanced statistical procedures. Experience with working on ecological research projects and publishing results. Experience producing technical reports. Experience working on interdisciplinary research teams. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of statistics, population dynamics, and other advanced statistical procedures for data analyses. Working knowledge of large and complex relational databases, and data integration techniques. Working knowledge of biological, physical, and ecological processes, particularly in marine ecosystems. Must be able to meet and maintain United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Ability to program in Matlab or R. Skill in applying statistical methods including generalized additive models. Proficiency with using advanced statistical and analytical procedures including multivariate analysis, spatial analysis, ecological modeling and simulation. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools (word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software). Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to contribute to scientific publications, and to make presentations that are suitable for a range of audiences. Must possess strong interpersonal skills to work with Principal Investigators, researchers, resource managers, and administrators. Post Offer Employment Requirement: Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of various satellite remotely-sensed data including ocean color, altimetry, and winds. Experience working with fisheries catch and effort data.
