Description of the subject area:The recognition of climate change effects on size-structured organisms suggests that we should expect large future effects on the structure and function of freshwater communities. In particular, large-sized organisms are predicted to suffer from metabolic constraints with potential effects on food web dynamics. Fluxes of nutrients and organisms across ecosystem boundaries are also predicted to increase with large expected effects on aquatic systems. The aim of this project is to evaluate functional changes in fish communities that are expected from climate change. The PhD student will work in an international team to test climate change effects along a latitudinal gradient across Europe. Several approaches will be used such as aquarium experiments, field studies and the development of a population dynamic model in relation to different climate change scenarios. Eligibility:To be eligible for a PhD-student position, the applicant must hold a University degree in natural sciences or equivalent, with a focus on ecology, limnology, community ecology or other relevant subjects. Earlier experience in one or more of the following fields is expected and will be considered as a merit: community and ecosystem ecology, experimental work with fish and multivariate statistics. The applicant should be familiar with general theory and models of population and community ecology. Strong motivation, flexibility, and capacity to independent work are important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
Position:The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The position can be combined with up to 20 % of assistantship (e.g. teaching), which will then prolong the position accordingly.
