2019-3-yr Post Doc Position – Marine Time Series Analyses

The University of Hamburg, Institute of Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries Science (IMF) invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Humboldt Tipping (Social-ecological Tipping Points of the Northern Humboldt Current Upwelling System and Economic Repercussions” in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). The position commences on 1st March, 2019.

The successful applicant will assemble and analyze historical time-series data to examine ecological tipping points in the northern Humboldt Eastern Boundary Upwelling System (HUS) and
understand the responses of the HUS to various interacting drivers including climate change and fisheries. The work fits within the broader frame of exploring dynamic feedbacks among ecological, social and economic components of the HUS. This work dovetails with other, newly funded research programs examining trophic transfer efficiency (‘CUSCO’) and fisheries-induced evolution (‘SOMBEE’) in the HUS. Furthermore, this position is part of a network of newly-funded programs exploring socio-ecological tipping points across a broad range of marine ecosystems including European regional seas. Active collaboration with scientists in these networks, especially those in Peru (IMARPE), is expected.

Beyond a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. Ecology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science), requirements include:

  • Experience in utilizing advanced statistical techniques on complex time series data, especially Generalized and Additive Mixed Modelling techniques or Machine Learning approaches.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
    • The ability to work independently and proactively in an inter- and trans-disciplinary team
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. If applicable, please list further requirements here.
